Prof mwendaCatherine Syombua M. Mwenda is an Associate Professor- Nursing Sciences and Dean, School of Nursing Sciences and Public Health. She holds a BSc Nursing, MSc Nursing and Phd in Nursing all from The University of Nairobi (UoN). Catherine was awarded PhD in Nursing Sciences and graduated in 2012. She started her professional career as a BSc Nurse (NO I) at Isiolo Level 4 Hospital from January 2002 to February, 2007. Her teaching career started at Kenya Methodist University from March 2007 to July 2008 as a Full time lecturer. She then moved to Kenyatta University (KU) from August 2008 to February 2013 as a Full time Lecturer and School of Health Sciences examination coordinator. In March 2013, Catherine moved to Mount Kenya University, School of Nursing Sciences where she was promoted to Senior Lecturer. She worked at different capacities include academic leader at the school, postgraduate coordinator and chair of Medical Surgical Nursing department. She also participated in writing of various proposals for funding through which she managed to win a multidisciplinary-multi institutional research grant by National Research Fund as a Principal Investigator. Catherine is currently employed as an Associate Professor of Nursing Sciences at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Main campus as the dean School of Nursing Sciences and public Health.
Catherine has done several scientific researches, supervised over 30 postgraduate student (masters and PhDs) and done over 35 peer reviewed research article publications. She has mentored several students and lecturers to attract funds through research proposals. She has participated as a committee member of the nursing council and national nurses association of Kenya for several years. Catherine has served as an external curriculum reviewer and external examiner of various universities in Kenya.

  • 19th April 2018: Determinants of Psychoactive Substance Use among Undergraduate Students in a Private University in Kenya. In a Scientific International Conference organized by National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) held in Mombasa- Kenya
  • 31st September 2014: Presented a paper on testing the Nursing intervention model for the care of psychoactive substance dependent in-patients in Nairobi Kenya. In a Scientific International Conference organized by National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) held in Eldoret- Kenya
  • 25th April 2013: Presented a paper on substance abuse and depression in a Scientific International mental health Conference held in Nairobi Kenya
  • 21st November, 2012: Presented a paper on a nursing intervention model for the care of psychoactive substance dependent in-patients in Nairobi Kenya. In a Scientific International Conference held in South Africa, Cape Town by University of Western Cape.
  • 17th – 18th February, 2012: Presented a paper on psychoactive substance use among women of reproductive age in the 2nd international health care scientific conference held at Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology
  • 23rd April 2009: Presented a paper on psychoactive substance use and HIV/AIDS in a scientific Conference organized by Mental Health Chapter of National Nurses Association of Kenya.
