4) SELECTED RESEARCH GRANTS/ PROJECTS UNDERTAKED

2020-Date: Solar Powered Food ATMs for Refugee Camps: For World Food Program (WFP) East & Central Africa Regional Bureau (RBN) and submitted through University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Ltd, REF NO.: RBN2020NF16. This is a collaboration between United Nation’s World Food Program (WFP) and World Vision International (WVI). The project aims at piloting automated teller machines (ATMs) in refugee camps in East Africa, which dispense locally sourced foods like cereals; much like a banking ATM dispenses cash. The power, control and data aspects of this ATMs is my concern.

2020-Date: Agri photovoltaic and sector coupling - double use of land, quadruple effect: energy for water, plants and production (AgriPV4, ID No: 101037249). The overall objective of this project is to improve the energy supply in agricultural value chains through transfer and adaptation of the innovative concept of double land use by Agri photovoltaic (APV) in combination with sector coupling in six African countries (3 N-Africa, 3 East Africa), thereby enhancing economic and scientific collaboration among North and East Africa and with EU partners. Two paths of APV will be followed, parallel production of energy and crops in fields and in greenhouses, along important agricultural value chains in specific sites, which represent integrated systems of high economic and social value and high multiplicatory opportunities. This approach combines delivery and implementation of adapted high-tech solutions for North Africa and robust technologies for East Africa and supports intra- and intercontinental integration. It will in the long term increase the supply with affordable solar energy and reduce pressure on agricultural land and water resources, and increase food security, thereby supporting economic and social development.
